Karcher es autora de\u00a0<i>Shadow over the Promised Land: Slavery, Race, and Violence in Melville\u2019s America<\/i> (Louisiana State University Press, 1980) y\u00a0<i>The First Woman in the Republic: A Cultural Biography of Lydia Maria Child<\/i> (Duke University Press, 1994), as\u00ed como editora de las novelas\u00a0<i>Hobomok &#038; Other Writings on Indians<\/i> de Lydia Maria Child (1986),\u00a0<i>Hope Leslie<\/i> de Catharine Maria Sedgwick (1998),\u00a0<i>Bricks Without Straw: A Novel<\/i> de Albion Tourg\u00e9e (2009) y de la antolog\u00eda\u00a0<i>A Lydia Maria Child Reader<\/i> (1997).  Ha publicado art\u00edculos sobre escritura feminista y abolicionista y  sobre la obra, entre otros, de <strong>Orestes A. Brownson, Frederick Douglass,  Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Ida B.  Wells <\/strong>y<strong> Frances Wright<\/strong>.
